Fragments I: Alterations is an indeterminate piece, where a performer improvises on the guitar according to different sets of rules, hereafter called "fragments". The fragments each govern different aspects of the performance like pitch, rhythm, which strings are played, how many notes to play at once, etc. Each fragment is very specific about certain aspects but allows absolute freedom with other aspects. They are designed to push the performer into unexplored musical territory. As the performance progresses, different fragments can be taken up, or the performer can return to a former one.

Taylor, the guitarist, does a masterful job at creating a powerful mood with a minimal amount of musical material.

0:00 The first fragment he chooses specifies that a single-line bass is played against two-note chords in the treble.

0:18 The second fragment limits the pitches to an unconventional scale.

0:41 The third fragment governs the number of pitches that must sound together with each strum or pluck.

1:02 The fourth fragment specifies that upward intervals must be a slide or bend, and downward intervals must be a pull-off.

1:25 In this fragment, the performer cannot play a note on the same string twice.

1:41 At this point, he begins revisiting previous fragments, with variations in how he improvises according to the rules.
