Classical and modern music in a powerful and flexible tuning system called adaptive just intonation. Notes are tuned according to what chord they belong to, in order to make the harmonies resonate with the natural complementary frequencies of musical tones. This is called just intonation or JI. Tuning in this way creates jarring pitch shifts, but those are eliminated by spreading the error out among all adjacent and simultaneous notes using a computer algorithm. This is why it's called "adaptive." Hence, adaptive just intonation.
